TMC Rejects Rebel Faction’s Claim
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has rejected the rebel faction’s claim as “fraudulent” and submitted its response to the Election Commission (EC). TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee argued that the rebel leaders had themselves recognised the authority of the existing party leadership by contesting the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections on the TMC symbol.
Rebel Faction’s Allegations Dismissed
Banerjee stated that the rebel faction’s assertions were baseless and aimed at creating confusion. He emphasised that the party’s internal democracy and leadership structure remain intact. The TMC’s submission to the EC includes evidence that the rebel leaders had willingly used the party’s official symbol during the elections.
Legal and Political Implications
The EC had sought responses from both factions after the rebel group claimed to be the legitimate leadership. The TMC’s rebuttal is expected to strengthen its position in the ongoing dispute. Political analysts note that the outcome could impact the party’s unity ahead of future elections.
Background of the Dispute
The rift within the TMC emerged after a group of leaders challenged the current leadership under Mamata Banerjee. The rebel faction had approached the EC seeking recognition as the official party. However, the TMC argues that such claims are legally untenable given the rebels’ participation in the 2026 polls under the party banner.
