TMC's Sabina Yeasmin Wins Sujapur by Over 52,000 Votes

In the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Sabina Yeasmin secured a decisive victory in the Sujapur constituency, defeating the Congress party's Md. Abdul Hannan by a margin of more than 52,000 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Abhijit Rajak finished third with 20,066 votes. Sujapur is a general constituency located in the Malda district and falls under the Maldaha Dakshin Lok Sabha seat.

Constituency Profile

Sujapur is one of the notable towns of Malda, situated along the Ganges River. The constituency has a significant Muslim population, making it one of the most Muslim-dominated seats in Malda's electoral map. The Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) populations are very low, at approximately three percent and zero percent, respectively. Historically, the Congress party had a strong presence here, particularly through the Isha Khan Choudhury political family.

Previous Election Results

In the 2016 assembly elections, Isha Khan Choudhury won the Sujapur seat for Congress, comfortably defeating the TMC candidate. However, the 2021 elections saw a complete rout for Congress. TMC's Md. Abdul Ghani won with an extraordinary 73 percent vote share, giving TMC a majority of tens of thousands in a seat that Congress had held just five years earlier.

2026 Contenders

For the 2026 elections, TMC fielded Sabina Yeasmin, while Congress nominated Md. Abdul Hannan. Given the Muslim-majority character of the constituency, the BJP's Abhijit Rajak was unlikely to be the primary challenger. The result underscores TMC's continued dominance in this region, with Congress facing a steep challenge to recover the seat.
