Tamil Nadu Government Announces Subsidies for Hotels Switching to Electric Stoves

In a significant move to address the ongoing LPG supply disruption, the Tamil Nadu government has introduced a series of measures aimed at encouraging hotels and eateries to transition to electric stoves. The announcement was made on Saturday following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister M K Stalin.

Key Subsidy and Loan Initiatives

Under the new policy, hotels and eateries that switch to electric stoves will receive a subsidy of Rs 2 per unit for the additional power consumed. This incentive is designed to offset the increased electricity costs associated with the shift from LPG to electric cooking methods.

Additionally, the government has rolled out several loan schemes to support this transition:

  • Unemployed Youth Employment Generation Programme: Small- and medium-scale hoteliers can avail loans with a 25% subsidy, capped at Rs 3.7 lakh, to facilitate the switch to electric stoves.
  • Women Entrepreneurship Scheme: Women entrepreneurs are eligible for loans up to Rs 10 lakh with a 25% subsidy, providing enhanced financial support for female-led businesses in the hospitality sector.
  • Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme: Industrial units run by SC and ST entrepreneurs can receive a subsidy of up to 35%, with a maximum cap of Rs 1 crore, to adopt electric stoves and other sustainable practices.

Flexibility for Industries During Restrictions

To further ease the burden during the LPG restriction period, the government has permitted industries to temporarily use alternative fuels without requiring fresh approval from pollution control authorities. This measure aims to ensure business continuity while maintaining environmental compliance.

The initiatives reflect the state's proactive approach to mitigating the impact of LPG supply disruptions, promoting energy efficiency, and supporting economic growth through targeted subsidies and entrepreneurial schemes.
