TNSTC Suspends 11 Employees in Coimbatore for Alleged Election Code Breaches
The Coimbatore division of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has taken disciplinary action by placing 11 employees under temporary suspension. This move comes after allegations that these staff members, including drivers and conductors, violated the model code of conduct (MCC) during election-related activities.
Details of the Violations and Immediate Action
According to TNSTC officials, the suspended employees were reportedly found meeting with candidates from major political parties, the AIADMK and DMK, in the Mettupalayam area. Their actions involved submitting requests and actively participating in election campaigns alongside party workers, particularly during a visit by the chief minister to Coimbatore. These activities prompted swift disciplinary measures, with the suspension enforced for an initial period of two days as a corrective step.
Employee Frustration and Operational Challenges
In response to the suspensions, employees have voiced significant frustration, highlighting existing pressures on operations due to staff shortages. They argue that such disciplinary actions exacerbate their difficulties, stating, "We have been performing multiple duties under challenging conditions. The temporary suspension of 11 employees in Coimbatore has caused further dissatisfaction among the workforce." This sentiment underscores the broader impact on morale and daily transport services in the region.
Strict Guidelines and Future Enforcement
TNSTC regional authorities have emphasised the importance of neutrality for government employees during elections. They clarified that staff must not act as election agents, polling representatives, or vote-counting officials for any political party. Additionally, displaying party symbols, flags, or other political insignia on buses or government property is strictly prohibited. The election commission has issued explicit instructions mandating that government personnel maintain impartiality to ensure fair electoral processes.
Officials added that any future complaints of similar violations will result in strict action, reiterating that public servants must remain impartial and uphold the conduct rules mandated by the election commission. This stance aims to prevent further breaches and maintain the integrity of public services during election periods.
