Transgender Candidate Roshini S Makes History in Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls

In the bustling Chennai suburb of Villivakkam, a groundbreaking political campaign is unfolding under the slogan "Reach for the skies, Villivakkam (vinnai thodum Villivakkam)". This rallying cry belongs to Roshini S, a 28-year-old social activist who has become the sole transgender candidate in this year's Tamil Nadu state assembly elections, representing the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) party.

From Activist to Political Contender

Roshini, originally from Trichy, joined NTK in January after learning the party was seeking a transgender candidate. "I was told the party was looking to field a transgender candidate, and I fit their requirements," she explained. "Today, the people I meet as well as party cadres are convinced by the way I speak and connect with the public." Her selection followed an interview with NTK supremo Seeman, whom she has followed for a decade, where she discussed her interests and policy priorities, leading to her nomination for the Villivakkam seat.

A Campaign Focused on Community and Culture

Roshini's campaign is deeply rooted in social and environmental issues. She begins her day at 9 AM, but her main outreach occurs from 4:30 PM to 10 PM, involving door-to-door interactions with residents. Her platform includes:

  • Identifying school dropouts and establishing tuition centers to support them.
  • Promoting women's entrepreneurial education to foster economic independence.
  • Reviving forgotten Tamil cultural art forms to preserve heritage.
  • Campaigning against drug use to ensure community safety.
  • Identifying employment opportunities for youth and women to boost local economy.
  • Taking up environmental initiatives to protect natural resources.

"We must ensure safety for our future generations, our land and our Tamil culture. I am trying to convey this to the people," Roshini emphasized. "If I win this assembly election, the people of Villivakkam and I will make history by electing the first transwoman candidate."

Breaking Barriers and Building Connections

Despite being a transgender candidate, Roshini reports that the public perceives her more as a sister than through the lens of her gender identity. "I have barely seen two transgender persons in my constituency. I hope they will vote for me. But people here do not view me as a trans candidate, they see me as their sister," she shared, highlighting the inclusive nature of her campaign.

Political Landscape and Historical Context

Roshini faces stiff competition in Villivakkam, contesting against Karthik Mohan of the DMK, S R Vijayakumar of the AIADMK, and Aadhav Arjuna of the TVK. While she is not the first transgender person to contest assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, her candidacy marks a significant step toward greater representation and diversity in the state's political arena.

Her journey from social activism to political candidacy underscores a growing trend of marginalized communities seeking electoral participation. With her focus on education, environment, and cultural preservation, Roshini aims to not only win votes but also inspire future generations to engage in public service, regardless of gender identity.
