Transgender Activist Roshini S Campaigns to Make History in Villivakkam
In the bustling Chennai suburb of Villivakkam, a unique political campaign is unfolding under the slogan "Reach for the skies, Villivakkam" (vinnai thodum Villivakkam). This phrase not only defines her electoral message but also encapsulates the life philosophy of Roshini S, the only transgender candidate contesting the Tamil Nadu state assembly polls this year.
From Social Activist to Political Contender
Roshini S, a social activist originally from Trichy with a deep interest in environmental issues, joined the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) party in January. "I was informed that the party was seeking to field a transgender candidate, and I met their criteria," Roshini explained. "Today, both the public and party members are convinced by my ability to communicate and connect with people."
Her political journey began with an interview with NTK supremo Seeman, whom she has followed for a decade. During their meeting, Seeman inquired about her interests and policy priorities before offering her the Villivakkam constituency ticket. "It was entirely my party's decision," she noted regarding her candidacy.
A Platform Rooted in Community and Culture
Roshini's campaign centers on several key initiatives:
- Identifying school dropouts and establishing tuition centers to support their education
- Promoting women's entrepreneurial education and skill development
- Reviving forgotten Tamil cultural art forms and traditions
- Launching campaigns against drug abuse in the community
- Creating employment opportunities for youth and women
- Implementing environmental conservation projects
"We must ensure safety for our future generations, our land, and our Tamil culture," Roshini emphasized. "I am dedicated to conveying this message to the people of Villivakkam."
Campaign Strategy and Public Reception
Roshini follows a rigorous campaign schedule, beginning her day at 9 AM with brief public meetings. However, her primary outreach occurs from 4:30 PM until approximately 10 PM, when she conducts door-to-door visits to discuss her plans with residents.
Remarkably, Roshini reports that the public perceives her more as a sister than as a transgender candidate. "I have encountered only two transgender individuals in my constituency," she shared. "I hope they will support me, but most people here view me as their sister rather than a trans candidate. The understanding and encouragement I have received have been unexpectedly positive."
Historic Context and Electoral Challenge
Roshini is not the first transgender person to contest assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. In 2016, NTK fielded transwoman Devi in the RK Nagar constituency against the late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. However, Roshini aspires to become the first transgender candidate to win an election in the state.
She faces significant competition from established political figures:
- Karthik Mohan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)
- S R Vijayakumar of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)
- Aadhav Arjuna of the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK)
"If I win this assembly election, the people of Villivakkam and I will make history by electing the first transwoman candidate," Roshini declared with determination.
Her campaign represents a significant moment in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, challenging traditional norms while addressing core community issues. As election day approaches, all eyes are on Villivakkam to see if this groundbreaking candidate can indeed reach for the skies.
