Trichy Spent 3,917 Crore on Roads Since 2022-23, Says Mayor

Trichy Corporation's Massive Road Development Investment Unveiled

In a significant budget presentation at the Trichy Corporation's main office on Thursday, Mayor Mu Anbalagan disclosed that the civic body has allocated a staggering 3,917 crore towards road development works since the commencement of the 2022–23 financial year. This announcement highlights a major push in urban infrastructure under the current administration.

Extensive Road Network Laid Across the City

Mayor Anbalagan provided detailed figures, stating that a total of 1,094 kilometers of roads have been constructed over the past four years. This extensive network development is part of a broader strategy to enhance connectivity and mobility within Trichy, addressing long-standing transportation needs.

Criticism of Previous Government's Funding Approach

During his address, Anbalagan leveled allegations against the previous AIADMK government, accusing it of failing to secure and allocate exclusive funds for road works in areas where underground drainage projects were implemented in three phases. He emphasized that adequate funding was only obtained after the present council assumed office in March 2022, suggesting a shift in fiscal priorities and execution efficiency.

Breakdown of Completed Road Works

According to the Mayor, 11,206 road works were completed during this period. These projects were executed through various funding mechanisms, including:

  • The Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF)
  • General funds from the corporation's budget

Of these completed works, 793 were long bituminous roads, indicating a focus on durable and high-quality infrastructure that can withstand heavy traffic and weather conditions.

Upcoming Projects and Election Code Assurance

Mayor Anbalagan outlined future plans, noting that using TURIF, the corporation will relay damaged roads in all five zones of Trichy before the onset of the election model code of conduct. He confirmed that 64.5 crore has been sanctioned for this initiative, with physical work set to commence in the next few days. Importantly, he assured that the election code of conduct will not deter the progress of these essential works, ensuring continuity in development efforts.

Additional Funding for Major Road Redevelopment

In addition to the TURIF allocation, Anbalagan revealed that 5 crore has been sanctioned from the corporation's general funds specifically for the redevelopment of major city roads. This dual funding approach underscores a comprehensive strategy to upgrade both local and arterial routes, aiming to improve overall urban infrastructure and resident satisfaction.

The Mayor's presentation not only showcased past achievements but also set a clear roadmap for ongoing and future projects, reinforcing the corporation's commitment to transforming Trichy's road network amidst political and logistical challenges.
