Trichy Tipper Truck Seized in Illegal Sand Mining Crackdown, Driver Flees Scene
In a significant enforcement action against illegal sand mining, a tipper truck loaded with four units of sand was intercepted and seized by authorities in Trichy on Wednesday. The incident unfolded during a routine vehicle inspection conducted by a team from the Department of Geology and Mining.
Vehicle Check Leads to Discovery of Suspected Illegal Sand
The department team was conducting checks on the busy Trichy-Dindigul Road on Wednesday afternoon when they stopped the tipper truck for inspection. Upon examination, officials observed that the vehicle was transporting at least four units of sand, raising immediate suspicions about the legality of the cargo.
Officials proceeded to question the driver, identified as Mathi, regarding the destination of the sand and requested documentation authorizing its transportation. During this investigation, the driver suddenly exited his cabin and fled the scene, evading further questioning by authorities.
Truck Seized and Case Registered Under Multiple Legal Provisions
Following the driver's escape, the geology and mining team seized the tipper truck and transported it to the Edamalaipatti Pudur police station for further legal processing. Police have registered a formal case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with Section 21 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
These charges specifically address allegations of sand theft and illegal transportation of mined materials. Initial police investigations suggest the sand was likely illegally mined from areas near Manapparai before being loaded onto the truck for transportation.
Ongoing Search for Individuals Involved in Smuggling Operation
Authorities are now actively searching for the driver and other individuals potentially involved in what appears to be an organized sand smuggling operation. The seizure represents part of broader efforts to combat illegal sand mining, which has significant environmental and economic implications for the region.
This enforcement action highlights the continued vigilance of geology and mining departments in monitoring and preventing unauthorized extraction and transportation of natural resources. The case remains under investigation as police work to identify all parties responsible for the alleged illegal activities.
