Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam Initiates Voter Awareness Campaign in Trichy
The volunteer movement Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam launched a significant awareness campaign in Trichy on Monday, aimed at encouraging students and the general public to participate actively in the upcoming assembly election. The initiative focused on sensitizing citizens against accepting money or material benefits in exchange for their votes, emphasizing the importance of ethical voting practices.
Campaign Leadership and Key Messages
K C Neelamegam, the state treasurer of the iyakkam, led the campaign near the Chathiram bus stand, targeting students and urging everyone to exercise their fundamental voting right. Volunteers pasted stickers in crowded public places bearing powerful slogans such as:
- "My vote is my right"
- "My vote is not for sale"
- "Let us fulfill our duty to vote"
- "Let us change the foolishness of voting for money"
These messages were designed to resonate with the youth and instill a sense of civic responsibility.
Emphasis on Ethical Voting and Corruption Risks
R Elango, the state deputy secretary of the iyakkam, stated that while students are free to vote for any candidate of their choice, they must refrain from accepting money or gifts in return. He highlighted that voting for money not only aids corruption but is equivalent to sharing corrupt money, undermining democratic integrity. This stance underscores the movement's commitment to fostering a corruption-free electoral process.
Future Outreach Plans
The volunteers have resolved to continue the awareness campaign with expanded outreach efforts. They plan to conduct activities in various crowded public places, including:
- Sports grounds
- Reading rooms
- Markets
- Shopping complexes
- Other similar high-traffic locations
This strategic approach aims to maximize impact and reach a broader audience, ensuring that the message of ethical voting spreads widely across the community.
