NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained a broader edge across the state, but the Raidighi assembly constituency in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district was retained by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Tapas Mondal, son of former MLA Shibprasad Mondal, secured 1,18,991 votes to win the seat. He defeated BJP candidate Palash Rana by a margin of 5,957 votes in a closely fought contest that remained competitive throughout the counting process. Rana polled 1,13,034 votes, finishing second.
Constituency Profile
Raidighi is one of the seven assembly segments under the Mathurapur (SC) Lok Sabha constituency. The current sitting MLA is Aloke Jaldata of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), who won the seat in the 2021 assembly election with 48.47% of the vote share. The BJP's Santanu Bapuli came second with 33.58% of the votes. In the recent polls, Tapas Mondal was the TMC candidate, challenged by BJP's Palash Rana.
Historical Performance
The constituency has been a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress for multiple consecutive elections. Earlier, Debasree Roy of AITC represented Raidighi, winning the seat in both the 2016 and 2011 assembly elections. This consistent performance reflects continued voter support for the party in the region.
Election 2026 Trends
The Raidighi result is part of the broader West Bengal election trends, where the BJP has made gains in several areas but TMC has held onto its traditional bastions.
