Tripura BJP MLA Tofazzal Hossain Faces Allegations of Police Intimidation

Allegations against Tripura BJP MLA Tofazzal Hossain of abusing and intimidating a police officer have unsettled the political landscape in the state, prompting demands for action from the opposition CPM and Tipra Motha, an ally in the state’s ruling coalition. The MLA from Boxanagar in Tripura’s Sepahijala district is accused of intimidating the officer-in-charge of Kalamchoura Police Station during a phone call. The incident has gained significant attention on social media due to its offensive and threatening nature.

Viral Audio Reveals Serious Accusations

In the viral audio, the MLA is heard accusing the police officer of accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from Tipra Motha supporters to ensure their candidate’s victory in the ADC elections. He expresses frustration over alleged attacks on BJP supporters by Motha workers after the polls. In the recording that has sparked widespread attention, the MLA allegedly sought to influence police decisions in favour of a suspected criminal, issuing explicit threats and using derogatory language against the officer.

Legal Action and Political Fallout

The situation escalated when the police reportedly took legal action against the MLA, accusing him of attempting to manipulate law enforcement and intimidate the officer, including threats of framing false charges if his demands were not met. Police have appealed to senior state leaders, including chief minister Manik Saha, for stringent legal measures against the MLA, citing concerns over political interference in law enforcement through official channels.

MLA's Controversial History Deepens Skepticism

The MLA’s controversies are further compounded by accusations from police that he disrupted polling stations in the Golaghati constituency during the ADC elections and was involved in unauthorised construction of a market shed on government land, deepening skepticism surrounding his actions. Further, the MLA reportedly made personal remarks targeting the officer, including serious allegations concerning his role in tribal areas.

BJP Response and Ongoing Investigation

BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee said, “Since the video has emerged on social media and involves a police officer, we are unable to comment until we have all the pertinent details.” The case highlights tensions within Tripura's political framework and raises questions about the integrity of law enforcement in the face of political pressure.
