Post-Poll Violence Intensifies in Tripura Following ADC Election Results
In a significant escalation of political tensions, Tripura has been rocked by a series of violent incidents in the aftermath of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections. The unrest unfolded after Chief Minister Manik Saha declared that the state government would rigorously enforce the Tripura Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Act, 2021, to recover costs from perpetrators of post-poll violence.
Alleged Attacks on BJP Properties and Supporters
According to reports from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), supporters of the Tipra Motha party allegedly set a BJP party office on fire in Nutan Bazar, located in the Manu Bonkul area of South Tripura, on Monday night. This act of arson marked a dangerous turn in the ongoing clashes that have plagued the region since the ADC election results were announced on April 17.
BJP mandal president Bipul Bhowmik has leveled serious accusations against Tipra Motha workers, claiming they have been engaged in widespread vandalism and criminal activities for three consecutive days. Bhowmik stated that he has filed a formal written complaint with the local police, detailing these allegations and seeking immediate intervention.
In a related incident, another BJP office in the Purana Bazar area of Manu Bonkul was reportedly attacked around the same time, further exacerbating the volatile situation. The BJP has also alleged that approximately 20 rubber trees were maliciously cut down in the plantation owned by BJP youth leader Sushanta Mog, indicating a pattern of targeted aggression against party supporters and their properties.
Chief Minister's Firm Response and Relief Measures
In response to the escalating violence, Chief Minister Manik Saha, accompanied by the chief secretary, home secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and other senior officials, conducted a visit to the violence-affected areas under Khowai district on Tuesday. During his inspection, Saha issued a stern warning, asserting that none of the individuals involved in the violence would be spared and that all responsible parties would be held fully accountable under the law.
The Chief Minister emphasized that compensation for the extensive property damage would be recovered directly from the perpetrators, in accordance with the state's recovery act. He also directed officials to provide comprehensive support to the victims, ensuring their safety and rehabilitation.
In a move to alleviate the suffering of those impacted, Saha announced financial aid for 258 families affected by the post-election violence. He personally met with displaced families who had sought refuge at the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel after allegedly being forced from their homes by Tipra Motha cadres. The state government has sanctioned an immediate relief package of Rs 25,000 per affected family, with district magistrates and collectors tasked with ensuring the prompt and efficient distribution of these funds. An initial allocation of Rs 64.5 lakh has been made to facilitate this relief effort.
Political Context and Electoral Outcome
The backdrop to this violence is the recent ADC election, where Tipra Motha emerged victorious, securing 24 out of the 28 seats. Following the declaration of results, numerous BJP supporters across West Tripura, Sepahijala, Khowai, and South Tripura districts reportedly abandoned their homes due to widespread incidents of vandalism, property damage, and physical injuries. This exodus highlights the severe impact of the political strife on local communities.
Tipra Motha leaders have declined to comment on the allegations made by the BJP, leaving the accusations unresolved and adding to the tension. The sporadic violence continues to pose a significant challenge to law and order in the region, with authorities on high alert to prevent further outbreaks.
