In a significant financial announcement, Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy presented the state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 on Monday. The budget, amounting to Rs 34,212.31 crore, reflects a 5.52% increase over the previous fiscal year's allocation. This move underscores the state's commitment to economic growth and development under the current administration.

Budgetary Projections and Fiscal Health

The budget outlines a fiscal deficit of Rs 240.72 crore, indicating a carefully balanced approach to state finances. Total receipts are estimated at Rs 33,971.59 crore, while total expenditure is pegged at Rs 34,212.31 crore. On the revenue front, receipts are projected at Rs 26,881.99 crore against an expenditure of Rs 25,266.39 crore, resulting in a revenue surplus of Rs 1,615.60 crore.

To fund its initiatives, the state plans to raise Rs 7,089.60 crore through various sources, including loans, public accounts, and opening balances. Capital expenditure is anticipated to reach Rs 8,945.92 crore, leading to a capital deficit of Rs 1,856.32 crore. These figures highlight the government's strategic focus on long-term investments and infrastructure development.

Historical Context and Growth Trajectory

Finance Minister Singha Roy emphasized the substantial growth in public spending over the past eight years of BJP rule in Tripura. He compared the current budget of over Rs 34,000 crore with the Rs 15,000 crore budget in 2018, describing this increase as a clear indicator of progress and economic advancement. This rise in allocation is aimed at:

  • Strengthening infrastructure across the state
  • Expanding social welfare programmes to benefit citizens
  • Promoting digital governance initiatives
  • Improving public service delivery mechanisms

Employee Benefits and Dearness Allowance Hike

In a move to support state employees, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced a 5% increase in dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) for approximately 1.2 lakh state government employees and more than 8,000 pensioners. This adjustment reduces the gap in DA and DR between central and state employees to 17%, providing much-needed financial relief to the workforce and retirees in Tripura.

The budget presentation marks a pivotal moment for Tripura's economic planning, with a focus on sustainable growth and enhanced public welfare. As the state moves forward, these financial measures are expected to drive development and improve the quality of life for its residents.
