Truck Crashes into Tilaiya Dam in Hazaribag, Leaving Driver Dead and Helper Injured
A tragic accident occurred in Hazaribag late on Wednesday when a truck loaded with fish plunged into the Tilaiya dam after breaking through the railing of the Jawahar Ghat bridge. The incident, under the Barhi police station area, resulted in the death of the driver and left the helper seriously injured, as confirmed by police on Thursday.
Details of the Accident and Rescue Efforts
The truck, bearing registration number AP 35 X 8299, was transporting fish from Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh to Muzaffarpur in Bihar. According to authorities, the driver lost control of the vehicle near the bridge, leading to the catastrophic crash. The impact was so forceful that fish scattered across the road, creating a chaotic scene.
Miraculously, the helper survived the fall and was later discovered hanging from a pipe attached to the bridge railing. Local passersby quickly rescued him and rushed him to the Barhi sub-divisional hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
Barhi police station in-charge Vinod Kumar immediately responded to the scene with his team to initiate a rescue operation. He stated, "The truck is completely submerged in the dam, and the driver's body is suspected to be trapped inside the vehicle." Since Thursday morning, authorities have deployed two cranes and local divers in an attempt to locate the driver, but the operation has been hampered by deep water and poor visibility, making the task extremely challenging.
Ongoing Recovery and Community Concerns
As of the latest reports, efforts are still underway to retrieve the submerged vehicle and recover the driver's body. The difficult conditions have prolonged the operation, with rescue teams working diligently against the odds.
Local residents have expressed grave concerns about the safety of the Jawahar Ghat bridge, noting that accidents are frequent in this area. They have called for enhanced safety measures, including the installation of stronger railings and clear warning signage, to prevent similar tragedies in the future. This incident has highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to ensure public safety on this critical route.
