The crucial replacement work for the aging crest gates at the vital Tungabhadra dam in Munirabad, Koppal taluk, is finally set to commence this Friday. This long-awaited project aims to ensure the reservoir's structural integrity and efficient water management for the region's agricultural needs.
Minister Sets Deadline for Completion
During a key meeting held on December 2, technical officials from the Tungabhadra Board presented the update to Minor Irrigation Minister NS Boseraju. They confirmed that out of the total 33 crest gates slated for replacement, 15 are already fabricated and ready for installation on-site.
Minister Boseraju issued clear instructions, emphasizing effective collaboration to support the farming community. He directed officials to ensure the entire replacement process is finished by next June. The minister stressed the urgency of preparing the remaining 18 gates to keep the project on schedule.
Technical Challenges and Inter-State Coordination
The technical team outlined the necessary steps for the gate installation. They explained that work to open the gate covers will start on Friday. A critical prerequisite for the installation is lowering the dam's water level.
This requires a coordinated release of water to neighbouring states. As per the plan, approximately 7 TMC feet of water must be released to Andhra Pradesh and another 5 TMC feet to Telangana. The officials highlighted that actions must be closely coordinated with the governments of both these neighbouring states to manage downstream impacts.
Key Attendees at the Planning Meeting
The important meeting saw participation from a range of officials and leaders. Alongside Minister Boseraju, former minister Mallikarjun Nagappa was present. Key engineering officials included Chief Executive Engineer Lakshman Nayak, Superintendent Engineer Satyanarayana, Shantaraj, Executive Engineer Godekar, Girish, and Vijayalakshmi. Congress leaders Shantappa Doddabasappa Gowda and Amaregowda also attended the discussions.
The successful and timely completion of this gate replacement project is vital for water security and irrigation stability in the Tungabhadra command area, directly impacting the livelihood of thousands of farmers.
