TVK Accelerates Candidate Interviews for Puducherry Assembly Elections
As the nomination process for the upcoming assembly elections in Puducherry commenced on Monday, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party swiftly initiated interviews with aspirants at its Panayur office in Chennai. The party is gearing up for a solo race in the union territory, with a diverse list of candidates ranging from former MLAs and a retired bureaucrat to dedicated party supporters.
Leadership Adjustments and Campaign Finalization
Originally, party president Vijay was scheduled to conduct the interviews, but he had to rush to his Foreshore Estate office and subsequently to the party's IT war room at Teynamept. There, he met with key functionaries and political consultants to finalize his campaign schedule for Tamil Nadu, highlighting the tight timelines and strategic priorities.
In his absence, the Puducherry aspirants were interviewed by party general secretaries N Anand and Aadhav Arjuna. During these sessions, candidates received detailed briefings on constituency-specific promises, booth-level mobilization plans, campaign schedules, and logistics tailored for the short election cycle.
Notable Aspirants and Their Profiles
Among those interviewed were several high-profile figures:
- Retired IG Murugan, who emphasized his clean 35-year career free from corruption charges. He expressed confidence in offering a corruption-free government under Vijay's leadership.
- Former AIADMK MLA A Periyasamy, bringing experience from previous legislative roles.
- Former BJP state president V Saminathan, adding political diversity to the candidate pool.
Party sources indicated that these individuals are likely to contest from key constituencies, with Murugan expected from Raj Bhavan, Periyasamy from Lawspet, and Saminathan from Nettapakkam, respectively.
Surprise from Election Commission and Rushed Timelines
TVK functionaries revealed that the Election Commission of India's (ECI) announcement scheduling polling in Puducherry on April 9 came as a surprise to the senior leadership. They had anticipated that the ECI would hold elections for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry together, allowing for more coordinated planning.
With nominations opening immediately, the party is now set to rush through the process of shortlisting candidates. This unexpected timeline has forced TVK to accelerate its preparations, focusing on efficient candidate selection and campaign deployment to meet the tight deadlines.
The party's proactive approach underscores its commitment to a strong showing in Puducherry, as it navigates the challenges of a condensed electoral schedule while aiming to present a robust alternative to voters.
