TVK Leader and Son Face Police Case Over Viral Abuse Incident
In a significant development in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, police have registered a case against Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam's (TVK) district secretary S Sugumar and his son for alleged verbal abuse and criminal intimidation. The incident, which has sparked controversy, came to light after a video of the altercation went viral on social media platforms.
Background of the Complaint
The case stems from a complaint filed by K Nagendran, a 29-year-old resident of Melavanjur and former TVK secretary of the east branch in Thirumarugal block. According to sources, Nagendran had raised concerns about the party's expenditure with Sugumar, leading to his removal from the position in December last year. After being ousted, Nagendran approached higher party leadership for resolution but was advised to settle the matter directly with Sugumar.
Details of the Alleged Incident
On January 26, Nagendran met Sugumar to resolve the issue, but the encounter turned hostile. Sugumar and his son, identified as S Ronaldo, allegedly subjected Nagendran to verbal abuse and issued threats of serious consequences. A purported video of this incident quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism and public scrutiny towards Sugumar.
Police Action and Investigation
Acting on Nagendran's complaint filed on Tuesday, Velipalayam police, under instructions from Superintendent of Police K S Balla Krisshnan, registered a case against Sugumar and Ronaldo. The charges have been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Nagendran submitted the viral videos as evidence and expressed serious concerns about threats to his life, prompting an ongoing investigation into the matter.
This case highlights internal party tensions and raises questions about accountability within political organizations. The police are currently investigating the allegations to determine the full extent of the incident and any potential legal ramifications for the accused.
