Chennai: Aadhav Arjuna, general secretary of the TVK election campaign management, on Saturday submitted a petition to chief electoral officer Archana Patnaik, urging the Election Commission to strengthen security arrangements at and around the 62 counting centres ahead of the vote counting scheduled for May 4. The request aims to prevent unlawful activities and ensure the safety of party candidates and agents.
Allegations of Vandalism and Threats
In his petition, Arjuna stated that the party's office in the Srirangam constituency in Trichy district was set on fire by anti-social elements on Friday. He further alleged that similar acts of vandalism are being planned with the ulterior motive of disrupting the peaceful counting process. According to Arjuna, these elements also intend to prevent TVK candidates and counting centre agents from performing their duties on counting day.
Demand for Armed Police Protection
The party has called for the Election Commission of India's intervention to curb unlawful activities in and around the 62 counting centres and to ensure the safety of party candidates and functionaries involved in election work. Arjuna urged the CEO to issue directives to officials to deploy sufficient armed police protection across the state.
The petition underscores growing concerns over security ahead of the counting process, with TVK seeking robust measures to safeguard democratic proceedings.
