Twin Earthquakes Rattle Vidarbha Region, Mild Tremors Felt in Multiple Districts
Parts of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region, including the cities of Nagpur, Akola, and Chandrapur, experienced mild seismic activity on Saturday following two separate low-intensity earthquakes. The tremors caused brief alarm among residents but resulted in no reported damage or casualties, according to official statements.
Morning Earthquake Strikes Hingoli District
A moderate earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale occurred in Hingoli district during the morning hours. The National Centre for Seismology confirmed the seismic event took place at 8:45 AM at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
Key details of the morning earthquake:
- Epicenter: Hingoli district, Maharashtra
- Magnitude: 4.7 on the Richter scale
- Depth: 10 kilometers
- Affected areas: Strongest shaking reported in Hingoli and nearby Nanded district
Nagpur, located approximately 265 kilometers from the epicenter, experienced only mild vibrations. Seismological data indicated minimal ground movement in Nagpur that posed no risk of structural damage.
Geological Context and Expert Analysis
The earthquake occurred in the intraplate region of the Deccan Plateau and is believed to be associated with the Kinnerasani-Godavari Fault system. Geological experts explained that such seismic events result from movements along ancient fault lines within the plateau structure.
"The Hingoli region falls within a moderate seismic zone where occasional tremors of this nature are expected," stated seismology experts. They emphasized that the region's geological characteristics make it susceptible to periodic low-intensity earthquakes.
Afternoon Tremors in Chandrapur District
Later in the day, separate mild tremors were recorded at 4:22 PM in Rajura and Korpana areas of Chandrapur district. District administration officials confirmed this second earthquake measured 3.4 on the Richter scale.
Details of the afternoon earthquake:
- Epicenter: Near Hardona village in Rajura taluka
- Magnitude: 3.4 on the Richter scale
- Depth: Approximately 10 kilometers
- Impact: Caused brief panic but no reported damage
Local tehsildars confirmed that both Rajura and Korpana talukas remained unaffected in terms of property damage. Geology expert Professor Suresh Chopane suggested that such minor tremors could potentially be linked to underground movements, possibly influenced by water seepage from the Godavari basin.
Official Response and Public Assurance
Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information about the seismic events. Multiple government agencies have assured the public that the situation is under continuous monitoring and control.
Key official messages:
- No structural damage reported in any affected area
- No casualties or injuries confirmed
- Residents advised to stay informed through official channels
- Rumors and misinformation should be avoided
The twin earthquakes serve as a reminder of the region's geological activity while demonstrating the resilience of local infrastructure against low-intensity seismic events. Monitoring continues as authorities maintain vigilance across the affected districts.
