HYDERABAD: Two alumni of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), Roji M John and Rony K Baby, have emerged victorious in the recently concluded Kerala Assembly Elections. John was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Angamaly constituency, while Baby won from Kanjirappally.
John’s Journey from UoH to Kerala Assembly
“It is at UoH where I got an opportunity to interact with students from different states, understand their culture and politics. It gave me a democratic platform and helped in widening my understanding,” John, a three-time MLA, told TOI. He emphasised that student politics at UoH and later at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) paved his way into mainstream politics. “I was active in students politics both at UoH and JNU. I was also National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) national president,” he added.
University’s Pride in Alumni Achievements
The university stated that the journey of these students, from the halls of the Department of Political Science to the corridors of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, is a testament to UoH’s legacy of nurturing leadership. “The success of our alumni reflects the growing impact of UoH graduates on the realms of democratic leadership and social service. By bridging academic excellence with public responsibility, these leaders continue to make the university proud on a national stage,” a release from UoH read.
Academic Background of the Winners
According to details shared by the university, John completed his MA in Political Science during 2002-2004. He is a third-time MLA, having been elected from the same constituency since 2016. Baby, on the other hand, studied at UoH from 1998. He pursued an MA in Political Science from 1998 to 2000 and an MPhil in Political Science in 2003. He was elected to the assembly for the first time in 2026.
