Uddhav Thackeray Poised as MVA Candidate for Legislative Council Elections

In a significant political development, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has once again signaled that party chief Uddhav Thackeray is likely to be the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance's candidate for the upcoming legislative council polls. Speaking on Wednesday, Raut emphasized that if Thackeray becomes a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), it would strengthen the unity of the MVA coalition.

Alliance Support and Internal Discussions

Raut stated that while there is a widespread desire within the alliance for Thackeray to return as an MLC, the final decision rests with Thackeray himself. "There will be discussions among the three MVA parties on the one seat. Congress and NCP have indicated their stand. If Uddhav Thackeray decides to go to the council, he will have their support," Raut explained. He highlighted that there is a prevailing view within the MVA that Thackeray, as a former chief minister and key leader, should be present in the legislature to ensure the alliance remains cohesive and united.

Potential Unopposed Election and Political Implications

Last week, Raut suggested that if Thackeray contests the MLC polls, the election could proceed unopposed. "As per my understanding, if former CM Uddhav Thackeray is a candidate again, this election can be held unopposed. Now, we will sit in and decide in 1-2 days what stand to take as MVA, especially from the Shiv Sena (UBT)," he remarked. Political observers interpret this as a clear hint that Thackeray is being considered as a candidate, with the Congress already pledging support if he runs.

Congress Stance and Election Details

State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal has indicated that his party expects to contest a legislative council seat in the biennial elections next month if Thackeray does not seek renomination. Thackeray's current term as an MLC is set to expire in May, along with eight other members. For him to be re-elected, the MVA must vote jointly, as the Shiv Sena (UBT) alone lacks the necessary numbers to secure his victory.

The Election Commission of India has scheduled the biennial elections for nine council seats on May 12. The tenure of these MLCs, including Thackeray, ends on May 13, 2026. The other members retiring are Sanjay Kishanrao Kenekar, Neelam Diwakar Gorhe, Sandeep Diwakar Joshi, Dadarao Yadavrao Keche, Amol Ramkrushna Mitkari, Ranjitsinh Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil, Rajesh Dhondiram Rathod, and Shashikant Jaywantrao Shinde.

This development underscores the strategic moves within the MVA to maintain solidarity ahead of the polls, with Thackeray's potential candidacy seen as a unifying factor for the alliance.
