UDF Finalizes Seat-Sharing Arrangement for Upcoming Kerala Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, Opposition leader V D Satheesan announced on Tuesday that the seat-sharing negotiations within the United Democratic Front (UDF) for the forthcoming Kerala assembly elections have been successfully concluded. The Congress party is set to contest in a substantial 95 constituencies, marking a pivotal moment in the coalition's electoral strategy.

Congress Announces Initial Candidates and Alliance Allocations

The Congress party has already revealed 55 of its candidates, signaling a proactive approach to the upcoming polls. According to the finalized agreement, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will contest 27 seats, while the Kerala Congress (Joseph) faction has been allotted eight seats. The Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) will field candidates in five constituencies, maintaining its previous electoral footprint.

Smaller Allies Secure Representation in the Coalition

Several smaller political allies have also been accommodated within the UDF framework, each receiving one seat to contest. These include the Kerala Congress (Jacob), Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI), Communist Marxist Party (CMP), Kerala Democratic Party (KDP), and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). This inclusive approach ensures broad-based representation across the coalition.

Smooth Negotiations and Strategic Seat Exchanges

Satheesan emphasized that the seat-sharing discussions proceeded smoothly and concluded on a positive note, with all constituent parties reaching a consensus. As part of the strategic adjustments, Kerala Congress (Joseph) has ceded the Idukki and Ettumanoor seats to the Congress. In a reciprocal move, the Congress will contest in Thrikaripur, while Kerala Congress (Joseph) will field its candidate in Kanhangad, reflecting a collaborative spirit within the alliance.

RSP's Candidate Lineup and Strategic Decisions

The Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) has retained the same number of seats it contested in the previous assembly elections. Initially, the party sought to field a fifth candidate in Payyannur but later decided to support CPM rebel V Kunhikrishnan instead. RSP's confirmed candidates include Shibu Baby John in Chavara, Ullas Kovur in Kunnathur, Vishnu Mohan in Eravipuram, and Santosh Badhran in Attingal.

Key Candidates from Other Allied Parties

Among the other allies, K K Rema will contest from Vadakara for the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI), while Mani C Kappan of the Kerala Democratic Party (KDP) will again be in the fray from Pala. CMP leader C P John is set to contest from Thiruvananthapuram Central, and P V Anvar of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will seek mandate from Beypore. Anoop Jacob will defend Piravom for Kerala Congress (Jacob), showcasing a diverse candidate pool across the coalition.

Pending Decisions on Support for Independent Candidates

The UDF has decided to back G Sudhakaran in Ambalappuzha, but a final call on extending support to P K Sasi in Ottappalam is still pending. This indicates ongoing strategic considerations as the coalition fine-tunes its electoral approach to maximize chances in the upcoming assembly elections.
