In yet another organisational reshuffle, the Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (UP BJP) on Thursday announced the appointment of new presidents for five additional districts, including Varanasi and Gorakhpur Mahanagar. With this move, the party has now changed all its presidents across 98 organisational districts, a significant step ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for early next year.
Key Changes in District Leadership
The party replaced Varanasi district president Hansraj Vishwakarma with Ram Sakal Patel, who belongs to the Kurmi community. Vishwakarma was recently inducted into the Yogi Adityanath government's council of ministers earlier this month, necessitating the change.
In Gorakhpur Mahanagar, the UP BJP appointed Ramesh Gupta to replace Rajesh Gupta. Similarly, in Ambedkarnagar, the party replaced Triyambak Tiwari, a Brahmin, with Dilip Dev Patel, another Kurmi. The party decided to retain Kashinath Singh, a Thakur, as the district president of Chandauli.
In Deoria, the party replaced Bhupendra Singh with Kali Prasad, a Dalit. Prasad previously won the Salempur Assembly seat in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh elections.
Implications for the Upcoming Elections
This comprehensive reshuffle of district presidents is seen as a strategic move by the UP BJP to strengthen its organisational structure and address caste equations ahead of the crucial Assembly elections. The appointments reflect an effort to balance representation among various communities, including Kurmis, Dalits, and Thakurs.
The changes come as the party gears up for a high-stakes electoral battle, aiming to retain power in India's most populous state.
