UP CM: No deaths due to codeine syrup, NDPS Act applied

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made a significant statement regarding the alleged misuse of codeine-based cough syrup in the state. He asserted that there have been no recorded deaths in Uttar Pradesh directly attributable to the consumption of this syrup. The announcement was made on 22 December 2025.

Legal Action Under Narcotics Law

The Chief Minister emphasized that the state government is taking the matter of illegal diversion of codeine syrup with utmost seriousness. He confirmed that all related cases are being actively pursued under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This central legislation prescribes severe penalties for offenses involving controlled substances.

State Government's Successful Defense

Adityanath further revealed that the Uttar Pradesh government has successfully defended its position and actions on this issue in court. This indicates a legally robust approach to handling instances where prescription cough syrup, containing the controlled substance codeine, is allegedly diverted for non-medical purposes.

The statement seeks to address public concerns and clarify the official stance on a sensitive health and law enforcement matter. By invoking the NDPS Act, the state administration signals a zero-tolerance policy towards the illicit trade and misuse of such pharmaceutical products.
