Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has renamed Fazil Nagar as Pawagarh, continuing his government's policy of renaming cities and towns. The announcement was made via a post on social media platform X, where the Chief Minister shared a graphic with the new name.
Renaming Drive Continues
This is not the first such renaming under the Adityanath government. A few months ago, the Chief Minister had declared that Mustafabad in Lakhimpur Kheri district would be renamed as Kabirdham. The renaming of Fazil Nagar to Pawagarh is seen as part of a broader effort to replace colonial or Mughal-era names with those rooted in Indian culture and history.
Official Announcement
The official announcement was made on June 2, 2026. In his post, Adityanath stated, "Now Fazil Nagar is going to be given a new recognition as Pawagarh." The decision has been welcomed by supporters of the ruling party, who view it as a step towards reclaiming the region's heritage.
Reactions and Implications
The renaming has sparked mixed reactions. While some residents and political groups have praised the move, others have criticized it as a political gimmick. The opposition has questioned the government's priorities, arguing that renaming towns does not address pressing issues like unemployment and infrastructure. However, the state government maintains that such changes are essential for cultural revival.
Fazil Nagar, located in the Kaushambi district, will now be officially known as Pawagarh. The district administration has been directed to update all official records and signages accordingly.
