The crackdown comes on the direct instructions of Additional Chief Secretary and UPEIDA CEO Deepak Kumar. Taking serious note of the recent spike in fatal accidents, particularly during low-visibility conditions, Kumar has sought the urgent intervention of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Transport Commissioner.
In his official communication, Kumar emphasized the immediate need to bolster road safety measures during fog. He has directed officials to deploy special teams at the entry points of four crucial expressways: the Lucknow-Agra Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and the Gorakhpur Link Expressway.
What Will the Teams Check?
The scope of the checking drives is comprehensive, going beyond mere paperwork. The transport department teams have been mandated to conduct thorough inspections with the following checklist:
- Verification of vehicle fitness and registration certificates for buses and large commercial vehicles.
- Functional checks on critical safety equipment including reflector tapes, blinkers, headlights, and taillights.
This focus on operational lights is specifically aimed at preventing collisions during foggy weather, when visibility is severely compromised.

To ensure the drive's effectiveness, it will be a coordinated multi-departmental effort. Personnel from both the state police and the traffic police have been directed to actively join the transport department teams in these sustained checking campaigns.
