In response to the severe cold wave and dense fog conditions gripping Uttar Pradesh, the state government has launched a comprehensive relief operation to protect its vulnerable citizens. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued strict directives to ensure that no individual is forced to sleep in the open during this harsh winter period.
Massive Network of Night Shelters Activated
The administration has established a vast network of 1,247 night shelters across the state. As per the latest reports, approximately 9,949 people were utilizing these facilities for overnight stay. The Chief Minister has instructed all district administrations to actively identify and bring homeless people to the nearest shelter.
These shelters are not just basic roofs; they are equipped with essential amenities. The government has mandated provisions for hot water, adequate lighting, food, and security at each location to ensure safety and comfort for the occupants.
Blanket Distribution and Bonfire Arrangements
A major component of the cold relief effort is the large-scale distribution of blankets. A government spokesperson revealed that over the last three years, the state purchased an average of 1,065,889 blankets annually, spending an average of about Rs 44.38 crore on this initiative.
This year, a sum of Rs 17.55 crore has been released to all districts specifically for blanket procurement. The supply chain is in full swing, with 378,884 blankets already supplied and 140,364 blankets distributed to those in need as of Saturday.
Beyond shelters, the government is also facilitating warmth in public spaces. An allocation of Rs 1.75 crore has been made to all districts for lighting bonfires. The status of these bonfires is being regularly updated on the state relief portal, allowing for continuous monitoring at the highest government level.
Tech-Driven Alerts and Inter-Departmental Coordination
The state is leveraging technology to enhance its response. The Relief Commissioner's office has sent out a staggering 33.27 crore SMS alerts so far through the Sachet application and its web portal. These alerts have been targeted at both officials in affected districts and the general public to raise awareness.
Furthermore, key infrastructure departments including UPIDA, NHAI, and PWD are issuing continuous fog-related warnings to District Magistrates and police authorities. This coordinated approach aims to minimize disruptions and accidents caused by the low visibility conditions.
The multi-pronged strategy underscores the administration's focus on proactive governance during extreme weather, aiming to shield every citizen from the biting cold.
