Uttar Pradesh's Zero-Tolerance Policy on Cow Slaughter: Over 35,000 Arrests and Rs 83 Crore Assets Seized

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has implemented a rigorous zero-tolerance policy targeting cow slaughter, cattle smuggling, and illegal animal slaughter across the state. This initiative, which began with the amendment of the 'cow slaughter prevention law' in 2020, has resulted in significant enforcement actions aimed at eradicating these activities.

Legal Framework and Enforcement Actions

In June 2020, the 'Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020' was issued, strengthening the legal provisions against cow slaughter. Since then, authorities have registered a total of 14,182 cases related to cow slaughter statewide. Out of these, 35,924 individuals have been arrested, demonstrating the government's commitment to strict law enforcement.

Officials emphasize that controlling cow slaughter is not merely a law and order issue but is deeply connected to social faith and the rural economy. To address this, continuous actions have been taken through coordinated efforts by the police, administration, and stringent legal measures.

Stringent Legal Measures and Asset Seizure

In cases involving cow slaughter, authorities have not only filed regular criminal charges but also invoked strict laws to ensure severe consequences. Among the 35,924 arrested individuals, 13,793 have been booked under the Goonda Act, while 178 faced action under the National Security Act (NSA). Additionally, 14,305 cases saw enforcement under the Gangster Act.

These measures have effectively disrupted organized gangs engaged in cow slaughter and smuggling. During this period, several active networks were dismantled, and investigations extended to the properties of the accused. Economic targeting of criminals has been a key strategy; under section 14(1) of the Gangster Act, properties valued at nearly Rs 83.32 crore have been attached. This approach aims to weaken the financial strength of organized criminals by confiscating assets acquired through illegal activities, thereby deterring future crimes.

In numerous instances, land, vehicles, and other assets purchased with illegal earnings have also been seized, further crippling the economic foundations of these criminal operations.

Special Initiatives and Impact

The government has established special police teams dedicated to controlling cow slaughter. These teams employ intelligence monitoring, district-level task forces, and heightened vigilance in border areas to dismantle networks involved in cow slaughter and smuggling. Night patrolling has been intensified in many sensitive districts, and the transportation of cattle is closely monitored to prevent illegal activities.

Continuous drives against illegal slaughterhouses have been conducted, leading to a significant decline in cases of illegal animal slaughter across the state. Organized gangs have been curbed, contributing to improved law and order and protection of rural economic interests.

The comprehensive strategy, combining legal, administrative, and economic actions, underscores Uttar Pradesh's firm stance against cow slaughter, aligning with broader social and economic goals.
