Uttarakhand Congress Stages Protest at Gairsain Assembly Over Budget Session and Governance Issues
On Tuesday, members of the Uttarakhand Congress party organized a significant protest near the Gairsain assembly building, vociferously demanding an extension of the ongoing budget session. The demonstration was spearheaded by prominent Congress figures, including state chief Ganesh Godiyal, former chief minister Harish Rawat, and former minister Harak Singh Rawat. Protesters expressed deep frustration over a range of critical issues plaguing the state, highlighting what they described as a deteriorating situation under the current Dhami government.
Key Demands and Criticisms Raised by Congress Leaders
The protest centered on several pressing concerns, with leaders accusing the state administration of failing to address them adequately. A major point of contention was the delay in revealing the identity of a VIP involved in the Rishikesh resort case, which has remained unresolved despite a CBI probe being ordered. Additionally, protesters raised alarms over the perceived decline in law and order, corruption, and ongoing challenges such as migration, poor health services, and inadequate education facilities.
Ganesh Godiyal, in his address, emphasized the gravity of the Rishikesh resort murder case, calling it a "major blot on the state" and criticizing the lack of progress. "No one is willing to give answers. The VIP's identity remains a mystery," he stated, underscoring the government's alleged opacity. Harish Rawat further lambasted the administration for its "failure to control crime" and manage public safety effectively.
Protest Dynamics and Security Measures
Despite heavy security arrangements implemented at Jungle Chatti and throughout Gairsain city, Congress members successfully reached Diwalikhal, located just a few kilometers from the main assembly building at Bhararisain. This protest followed dramatic scenes inside the House on Monday, where Congress legislators had raised slogans, entered the well, and staged a walkout during the opening of the budget session. State Congress chief Karan Mahara criticized the session as a "formality" due to its short duration, arguing that it insufficiently addresses the state's needs.
The protest underscores growing political tensions in Uttarakhand, with the Congress party leveraging public discontent to pressure the ruling government.
