As Uttarakhand celebrates a monumental milestone – the completion of 25 years since its formation – the state government has announced a significant package of assistance for the heroes of the statehood movement. The Silver Jubilee celebrations, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were marked by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's homage to the martyrs and a series of enhanced benefits for the agitators and their families.
A Tribute to Sacrifice and Struggle
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, speaking at the Shaheed Sthal in Dehradun, emphasized that the creation of Uttarakhand was far more than a political decision. He stated it was the direct result of the immense sacrifice, struggle, and perseverance of lakhs of people. Recalling the painful and historic incidents at Khatima, Mussoorie, and Rampur Tiraha, where many lost their lives, the CM affirmed that these events are immortal chapters in the state's history.
He clarified that the new pensions and facilities are not merely government assistance but a profound mark of the state's gratitude towards those who fought for its very existence.
Key Announcements for Statehood Agitators
The state government has rolled out a slew of measures aimed at supporting the individuals who were at the forefront of the Uttarakhand agitation. The key announcements include:
A significant increase in monthly pensions for various categories of agitators. Those who were imprisoned for a minimum of seven days or were injured during the movement will now receive Rs 7,000 per month, up from the previous Rs 6,000.
For other categories of agitators, apart from those jailed or injured, the pension has been raised from Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,500 per month.
In a major boost for those who suffered permanent disabilities, the pension has been substantially increased from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per month. Furthermore, the government will provide a medical attendant for their care.
The dependents of agitators who were martyred during the movement will also see their pensions increased by Rs 2,500.
Honoring the Legacy of the Martyrs
Beyond financial aid, the government has also announced plans for a lasting tribute. The infrastructure facilities in the home villages of the statehood martyrs will be named after them, ensuring their legacy is permanently etched into the fabric of the state they helped create.
Chief Minister Dhami also made a heartfelt appeal to all residents of Uttarakhand. He requested that every household light five lamps on Statehood Day in memory of the brave agitators whose sacrifices paved the way for a separate Uttarakhand.
The state officially marked its 25th Foundation Day on Sunday, November 9, 2025, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi gracing the Silver Jubilee celebrations, underscoring the national importance of this milestone for the Himalayan state.
