Tenkasi: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Friday led a day-long hunger protest at Vasudevanallur in Tenkasi district, pressing for urgent action on multiple issues affecting farmers. The protest demanded immediate repair of the breach in the Shenbagavalli check dam, implementation of the Ullar anicut project, and measures to protect agriculture from damage caused by wild animals.
Vaiko Addresses Farmers and Party Cadres
Addressing party cadres and farmers, Vaiko highlighted that crop loss due to wild boars had become widespread. He called for removing the animal from the protected list to allow effective control measures. Vaiko stated he would take up this issue with the Union government.
Shenbagavalli Check Dam Breach
On the Shenbagavalli check dam, Vaiko noted that it had previously provided irrigation to around 25,000 acres. Water from this structure is essential for implementing the Ullar anicut project. He announced that the party would undertake a padayatra to mobilize public support on the issue.
Ullar Anicut Project Benefits
Once completed, the Ullar anicut scheme would benefit nearly 30,000 acres. Vaiko said he would urge the Tamil Nadu chief minister to expedite the project. He also mentioned that he had already taken up the issue of repairing the check dam breach with the Kerala government and would continue efforts to resolve it through talks.
Vaiko Dismisses Cabinet Speculation
Vaiko dismissed speculation about cabinet positions, asserting that the party was not driven by the pursuit of power. MDMK functionaries and party members participated in the hunger strike, showing solidarity with the farmers' demands.
