VCK backs Vijay's TVK, coalition tally reaches 118 in TN

CHENNAI: In a significant political development, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Saturday extended unconditional support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), providing much-needed relief to actor-turned-politician Vijay in his bid to form the next government in Tamil Nadu. The support from VCK, which has two members in the state assembly, brings the coalition's total to 118 seats in the 234-member house, crossing the majority mark of 118.

Coalition gains momentum

The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) had earlier extended their backing following the Congress party's support, taking TVK's tally from 107 to 116 by Friday night. With the VCK now on board, the coalition has reached the required number to stake claim to form the government.

Official communication

In a letter addressed to Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar, VCK legislature party leader Vanni Arasu formally conveyed the party's decision. The letter stated: "Under the instruction of our party president Thol Thirumavalavan, I, Vanni Arasu, as the leader of the legislature party of VCK, Tamil Nadu assembly, on behalf of our two members of the legislative assembly, do hereby convey our unconditional support to the TVK under the leadership of president and legislature party leader of C Joseph Vijay for the purpose of formation of the government in the state of Tamil Nadu."

In a separate communication to the governor, Thirumavalavan reiterated the party's support, emphasizing that it was extended following the results of the general assembly election held on April 23. He stated: "This support is extended pursuant to the results of the general assembly election held in Tamil Nadu on April 23 and is being conveyed in the interest of ensuring stable and democratic governance for the people of Tamil Nadu."

Political implications

The move is seen as a strategic alignment of Dravidian and progressive forces in the state. Political analysts view this as a consolidation of secular and pro-social justice parties around Vijay's TVK, which has emerged as a key player in Tamil Nadu politics. The coalition now has the numerical strength to form a stable government, provided the support holds.

The development comes amid ongoing negotiations among various parties to form the next government. With the VCK's backing, the TVK-led coalition appears to have crossed the threshold, though the governor's decision on inviting the party to form the government is awaited.
