VCK President's Election Withdrawal Creates Rift Within Party Ranks
Chennai: In a move that has generated significant internal controversy, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan has publicly defended his decision to withdraw from the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The veteran Dalit leader has reiterated that his choice was made exclusively in the broader interest of the political alliance, aiming to maintain coalition harmony ahead of the crucial polls.
Grassroots Disappointment and Aspirations Dashed
However, this strategic withdrawal has left a substantial section of the VCK's rank-and-file membership deeply disappointed and questioning the leadership's direction. "We were initially overjoyed when the announcement came that our revered leader would contest from the Kattumannarkoil assembly segment," revealed a state-level VCK functionary, speaking on condition of anonymity. "After more than two decades, we were eagerly anticipating seeing Thirumavalavan sir in the state assembly. His subsequent announcement to withdraw from the electoral fray was a profound letdown for countless dedicated workers."
Controversial Candidate Replacement Intensifies Discontent
The disappointment within party circles was further compounded by Thirumavalavan's decision to field Jothimani Ilayaperumal as his replacement candidate. While Jothimani is the son of the late Congress state president Ilayaperumal, a noted champion for Dalit rights, this nomination has sparked fresh controversy. Many VCK functionaries and aspirants feel that a valuable opportunity has been denied to a loyal party member, given instead to an individual from the Congress party. There is a growing sentiment that Thirumavalavan should have contested the election himself, withstanding any external criticisms for the sake of the party's core supporters and electoral ambitions.
Leader's Rationale and Mounting Allegations of External Pressure
Addressing the criticism, Thirumavalavan stated that he altered his plans due to allegations from opposition quarters that he was entering the assembly polls anticipating a hung assembly scenario. Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the AIADMK, PMK, and TVK, have alleged that the VCK chief changed his stance due to direct pressure from the alliance partner DMK. Thirumavalavan has categorically refuted these charges, asserting there was no such pressure from the DMK leadership.
Nevertheless, skepticism persists within sections of his own party. "There was an indirect pressure from the DMK. Internal pressures within our own party structure also played a significant role," claimed a VCK functionary from Tindivanam. The situation was complicated by internal demands for the Kattumannarkoil seat from prominent figures like party spokesperson Vanniyarasu and Cuddalore deputy mayor P. Thamaraiselvan. "To preempt and avoid escalating internal disputes, Thirumavalavan initially decided to contest the seat himself but later made the strategic withdrawal," the functionary added.
A Defensive Stance: Positioning as a Pan-Tamil Nadu Dalit Leader
In defense of the party president's controversial actions, a VCK spokesperson offered a different perspective, framing the decision as a strategic elevation of Thirumavalavan's political stature. "By offering a key assembly seat to a Congressman, Thirumavalavan has strategically positioned himself as a representative for all Dalits across the entire state of Tamil Nadu, transcending narrow party lines," the spokesperson argued. "This is consistent with his earlier support for AIADMK's R.K. Nagar candidate Porkodi Armstrong, despite her being from a traditionally opposing political camp. His vision is broader than a single assembly seat."
As Tamil Nadu gears up for the assembly elections, the VCK finds itself navigating a complex landscape of alliance politics, internal dissent, and the challenge of maintaining its distinct Dalit identity while being part of a larger coalition. Thirumavalavan's decision, justified as being for the alliance's greater good, continues to be a point of intense debate and reflection within the party's grassroots organization.
