Trichy: Residents of Veeravalli village near Kulithalai staged a road blockade on the Trichy–Karur National Highway on Sunday, protesting irregular drinking water supply for the past two months.
Protest and Traffic Disruption
Villagers sat across the highway with empty buckets and jugs, disrupting traffic for over an hour and causing a pile-up stretching nearly two kilometres on both sides. More than 150 families in the village depend on Cauvery water supplied by the local administration.
Residents alleged that the supply has been erratic for months and severely inadequate in recent weeks. They also raised concerns over water quality. "The water supplied earlier was discoloured and unfit for use," residents said, adding that repeated complaints to panchayat authorities had yielded no solution.
Demands and Resolution
Frustrated by the inaction, the villagers blocked the highway, demanding immediate restoration of regular and safe drinking water supply. They also urged authorities to consider constructing a new overhead tank if the existing Cauvery-based system fails to meet demand.
Police from Kulithalai, Mayanur and Lalapettai stations rushed to the spot and held talks with the protestors. The blockade was withdrawn after district officials assured residents that the issue would be addressed by the evening.
