Tamil Nadu's Veteran Politicians Defy Heat and Age in Marathon Campaign Trail
As the April 23 poll approaches, the campaign trail in Tamil Nadu has transformed into a remarkable display of endurance, with a 'silver guard' of veteran politicians in their 80s and 90s braving scorching 42°C temperatures to lead the electoral charge. These seasoned leaders are proving that age is no barrier in the state's dynamic political landscape, combining decades of experience with unwavering energy.
DMK's Duraimurugan: A Master Campaigner at 87
At 87 years old, DMK's Duraimurugan, a 10-time winner and undefeated 'champion' of Katpadi for 30 years, exemplifies this resilience. His day begins at 8:30 AM, as he campaigns in rural areas until 1 PM, before taking a break to recharge and strategize with party functionaries. As temperatures cool in the afternoon, he shifts focus to high-density urban wards, maintaining a rigorous schedule.
Duraimurugan has perfected the art of campaigning, weaving regional history and witty repartee into his speeches. He highlights his development efforts in the constituency, such as establishing Thiruvalluvar University in Serkadu, a government law college, and a hospital, while extending the 'combined Cauvery drinking water scheme' to the area. In emotional appeals, he declares his wish to be cremated in Katpadi, with his ashes spread across the region, stirring deep connections with voters.
An aide of four decades notes, "When he started, he appeared tired, but it's almost as if he has been energized by the public response. He is now keeping pace with the demanding schedule." This public engagement fuels his relentless drive.
Dravidar Kazhagam's Veeramani: A 92-Year-Old Ideological Force
Equally relentless is 92-year-old K Veeramani of the Dravidar Kazhagam, on his 45th campaign cycle since 1952. He has covered over 3,300 kilometers across 36 districts, upholding Periyar's social reformist policies while refraining from direct electoral politics. His campaign began on April 6 from Tirunelveli and has maintained momentum since.
Veeramani delivers 45-minute ideological speeches from atop a black customized van, focusing on social issues. Reflecting on his observations since 1946, he said, "This time, what stands out is the rise of women's participation; they comprise the majority of my audience. This is a big shift." He is currently heading to Cuddalore district for the final leg of his campaigning, showcasing his enduring commitment.
Other Veteran Campaigners: Diverse Strategies in Action
The energy is mirrored by other senior leaders:
- MDMK's Vaiko (81 years old): Known for high-octane speeches, he has blitzed through 25 constituencies in 12 days. Setting out by 4 PM and pushing until 10 PM, his signature format involves 40-minute speeches from his vehicle, culminating in high-decibel public meetings.
- BJP's M R Gandhi (81 years old): Adopting a different approach, his mornings are spent in a vehicle covering constituency fringes, while evenings involve door-to-door blitzes. Bolstered by BJP cadres and RSS units, Gandhi's campaign hinges on one-on-one interactions, often seen winding through narrow streets in an autorickshaw in Nagarcoil, where he is the sitting MLA.
Common Thread: Age as No Barrier in Tamil Nadu Politics
While these leaders fight for different causes—from development and social reform to ideological battles—they share a common trait: proving that in Tamil Nadu politics, age is no barrier. Their campaigns blend traditional grassroots methods with personal touches, even in a high-tech election environment. As the poll date nears, their endurance and dedication continue to inspire and shape the political discourse, highlighting the importance of experience and direct voter engagement in the democratic process.
