Maharashtra Government Appoints New PCMC Commissioner
The Maharashtra state government has officially appointed Vijay Suryawanshi, the divisional commissioner of the Konkan division, as the new municipal commissioner of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). This significant administrative appointment was announced on Wednesday, bringing an end to a prolonged vacancy in this crucial civic leadership position.
Filling a Long-standing Vacancy
The post of PCMC chief had remained vacant since October of last year following the transfer of the then commissioner, Shekhar Singh, who was appointed as commissioner of the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority. During this interim period, Shravan Hardikar, the Managing Director of Maha Metro, had been holding additional charge of the civic body while continuing his primary responsibilities with the metro rail project.
Officer Profile and Experience
Vijay Suryawanshi is a distinguished 2006-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer belonging to the Maharashtra cadre. He currently holds the prestigious rank of additional chief secretary and brings extensive administrative experience to his new role. His previous assignments include serving as:
- Additional metropolitan commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
- Municipal commissioner of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation
- District collector of Raigad district
- District collector of Gondia district
Addressing Administrative Demands
There had been persistent demands from newly elected representatives of PCMC as well as civic activists for the appointment of a full-time, dedicated commissioner. The previous arrangement with Shravan Hardikar holding additional charge presented challenges, as he frequently had to travel to Nagpur and other cities for work related to Maha Metro projects, potentially limiting his availability for PCMC matters.
The appointment of Vijay Suryawanshi as the full-time municipal commissioner is expected to provide focused leadership and administrative stability to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, ensuring more consistent attention to civic matters affecting the rapidly growing urban area.
