Vijayawada Ward Expansion Sparks Confusion Amid Census Timing Dispute
Confusion surrounds the expansion of wards in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, with the State government ordering an increase based on the last census, even as a fresh population survey is set to begin in 2026. This move has sparked debate among public representatives and officials over the timing and implications of the delimitation exercise.
Ward Increase Based on Old Census Data
As per the previous census, the number of wards in Vijayawada will rise from 64 to 86. However, public representatives argue that the upcoming census, scheduled for 2026, should be considered before finalising the expansion. They contend that using outdated data could lead to inaccurate representation and inefficient governance.
NTR District Collector and VMC Special Officer Dr G Lakshmisha stated, "Irrespective of the demands from public representatives, the ward delimitation as proposed by the government will be enhanced to 86 in the city. The government has given a timeline of two months to complete the delimitation exercise." He emphasized that the administration has informed representatives that the Greater Vijayawada exercise cannot be taken up until next year due to the ongoing census preparations.
Greater Vijayawada Initiative Delayed
The collector further explained that the commencement of the Greater Vijayawada exercise will occur after obtaining consent from neighbouring gram panchayats around Vijayawada, which have already expressed interest in merging with the city. "Currently, special officer rule is in force in gram panchayats. Resolutions will be passed by the special officers, following which the panchayats will be merged with Vijayawada to pave the way for a Greater Municipal Corporation," he added.
This delay has raised concerns among local stakeholders. Taxpayers Association Vijayawada president M.V. Anjaneyulu accused the government of deliberately postponing the Greater Vijayawada exercise to promote Amaravati instead. He alleged that despite awareness of the upcoming population survey, the government raised the issue late to stall the city's growth and development.

- Ward expansion from 64 to 86 based on old census data.

- Greater Vijayawada merger delayed until next year.
- Allegations of political motives behind the timing of the expansion.
The situation highlights the complexities of urban planning and governance in rapidly developing cities like Vijayawada, where accurate demographic data is crucial for effective administration and equitable resource distribution.
