TVK Chief Vijay's Continued Absence in Karur Disappoints Party Cadres After Tragic Stampede

Six months after a devastating stampede at his election rally in Karur that claimed 41 lives, TVK chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay has yet to return to the constituency, leaving party cadres, functionaries, and supporters deeply upset. While supporters emphasize they do not hold Vijay personally responsible for the September 27 tragedy, his prolonged absence has prevented him from addressing mounting criticism and has become a defining moment for both the leader and his party.

Supporters Express Frustration Over Missed Opportunity

"He ideally should have contested from here. That would have sent a strong message to critics and perhaps proved his mettle," stated S Bhuvanesh, a 23-year-old TVK supporter, reflecting widespread sentiment that Vijay's presence could have strengthened the party's position. The stampede's aftermath has been heavily politicized, with opponents leveraging the tragedy against TVK. Supporters argue that Vijay's return could have helped counter this narrative and demonstrated resilience.

Party Functionaries Defend Leader Amid Security Concerns

A TVK district functionary explained, "There is no anger against Vijay within the party. We all went through an emotional phase after the incident. However, he has promised to visit every village, place and people in Tamil Nadu after he wins the election." Karur West district secretary and Karur candidate V P Mathiazhagan cited logistical hurdles, noting, "There have been issues in obtaining permission and ensuring adequate security. In Trichy, security arrangements were good, but in some places, he had to cut short his campaign without speaking due to inadequate protection."

Cancelled Events and Campaign Strategies

In Trichy, permission was granted for a functionaries' meeting on April 14, but TVK ultimately called it off. This decision has raised concerns among supporters like G Satyaseelan, 23, who remarked, "While other candidates have been campaigning every day, one more campaign by Vijay in Trichy could make a difference in Trichy East seat, where he is also contesting." The absence has forced TVK candidates to adopt unconventional methods, including using statues in campaign vehicles, lookalikes, and hologram AI technology to maintain voter engagement.

Political Observers Analyze the Impact

Political analysts note that Vijay's inability to visit key constituencies has created a vacuum in TVK's campaign strategy. The reliance on technological substitutes and symbolic representations highlights the challenges faced by the party in maintaining momentum without its star leader's physical presence. The stampede remains a pivotal event, not only due to its tragic scale but also because of the subsequent political fallout that continues to shape public perception and election dynamics in the region.
