Vijay's Political Debut in Perambur: DMK vs TVK Clash Intensifies
The political debut of Tamil actor and TVK president Vijay has become one of the most closely watched contests in Tamil Nadu, with the Perambur constituency emerging as the battleground. Initial speculation suggested Vijay might contest from Velachery or Virugambakkam, but the first clear sign came when TVK cadres passed a resolution urging him to stand from Perambur.
Within days, TVK established an air-conditioned election office in the north Chennai segment, confirming Vijay would make his political debut there. Since then, Perambur has transformed into a high-stakes political arena.
The Ground Reality: Established Machinery vs Personality Campaign
On the ground, the Perambur contest is playing out as a classic clash between the DMK's well-oiled election machinery operating at full capacity and Vijay's personality-driven campaign. The constituency, populated by working-class residents, a sizable Dalit vote bloc, and minorities, has traditionally been left-leaning and DMK territory.
Vijay has directly challenged this status quo. One significant factor in his choice of Perambur was that approximately 40,000 voters had registered on TVK's membership app by March 2026, demonstrating existing support in the area.
DMK's Full-Scale Campaign Operation
The DMK has deployed its most powerful campaign resources to defend the seat. Star campaigners including Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, actor Sathyaraj, and VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan have been canvassing for DMK candidate R D Sekhar, a three-time MLA.
Chief Minister M K Stalin personally conducted a roadshow through the constituency on Monday, while party cadres are executing door-to-door outreach targeting all 2.2 lakh voters in the area.
TVK's Grassroots Challenges
The absence of a seasoned poll machinery is evident in TVK's campaign operations. The party has organized teams of 25 to 100 members across its 14 divisions to canvass votes and distribute booth slips. However, most cadres, aged between 25 and 40, struggle to connect effectively with older voters and established community groups.
Obtaining permissions for local rallies posed significant challenges for TVK until recently. "But after Vijay himself visited a few houses here, cadres are charged up," explained Ramesh, a party functionary.
Contrasting Campaign Messages
The DMK campaign emphasizes continuity of its welfare measures, while TVK's message centers on the need for political change. Interestingly, both sides are leveraging Vijay's celebrity status—he banks on his stardom for appeal, while the DMK uses it to question his accessibility.
"Vijay may remain out of reach if elected. He will not be accessible," argues DMK candidate R D Sekhar, attempting to turn the actor's celebrity against him.
Local Issues and Anti-Incumbency Factors
Simultaneously, anti-incumbency sentiment against three-time MLA R D Sekhar is visible, with several unresolved local issues plaguing the constituency. Problems include persistent flooding in Vyasarpadi, the Kodungaiyur dumpyard situation, polluted water supplies, housing delays, and sewer system failures, compounded by Sekhar's alleged absence from zonal meetings.
"He made courtesy visits only to main roads in Muthamil Nagar and Mullai Nagar, not flood-hit areas in 2023," noted L Ashok, a resident of Vyasarpadi, highlighting the disconnect between the incumbent and constituents.
The PMK Factor and Voter Dynamics
In this intense battle between DMK and TVK, the voice of PMK candidate M Thilagabama appears somewhat drowned out. She is largely banking on ally AIADMK's traditional vote share. Political analyst D Rajan observes, "With a 25% drop in voters after SIR, whether AIADMK supporters, especially women, stay loyal or shift will decide if the contest tightens significantly."
High Stakes for Both Parties
Aware of the substantial challenge, DMK members have set aside internal differences and are working overtime to secure victory. For the ruling party, a defeat in Perambur would mean not just one fewer MLA in the assembly, but potentially the emergence of a formidable new challenger in Tamil Nadu politics.
For TVK and Vijay, success in Perambur would validate their political entry and establish them as a credible force in the state's political landscape. The outcome will signal whether star power can overcome established political machinery in Tamil Nadu's complex electoral arena.
