Karnataka: Water Supply Restored to Koraga Tribal Families After Protests
In a distressing incident that has drawn sharp criticism, approximately six families belonging to the Koraga community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), residing in Chelyaru village within Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, were deprived of their drinking water supply. The issue, which unfolded on Thursday, triggered widespread opposition from left-leaning political parties and various like-minded organizations, leading to swift administrative action.
Administrative Action and Restoration
Following the outcry, taluk panchayat authorities visited the affected area and, by evening, successfully restored water supply to the families. This intervention came after the matter was brought to the attention of District Commissioner Darshan HV, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Allegations of Retaliatory Attitude
Yogesh Jappinamogaru, the Dakshina Kannada district coordinator for the Karnataka Adivasi Hakkugala Samanvaya Samiti, strongly condemned the actions of the Chelyaru gram panchayat administration. He alleged that the administration displayed a cruel and retaliatory attitude towards the Koraga community, an economically disadvantaged group.
"Citing non-payment of bills, the drinking water connections of six economically weak Koraga families were cut off on Thursday, which is an affront to humanity," Yogesh stated. He further accused the panchayat of acting in a retaliatory manner even after the injustice was reported to the district administration, rather than seeking a constructive solution.
Escalation of the Crisis
After their private connections were severed, the Koraga families resorted to fetching water from a public tap provided by the panchayat in their colony. However, in what Yogesh described as an act of extreme cruelty, the panchayat administration subsequently cut off the water supply from this public tap as well.
"The administration stooped to the level of depriving the six Koraga families of water. Such behaviour towards a marginalised tribal community tramples on the values of democracy," he emphasized, clearly exposing what he termed a cruel mindset.

Yogesh issued a stern warning, indicating that if the issue was not resolved promptly, intense protests would be organized against this injustice. The threat of escalated demonstrations underscored the gravity of the situation and the community's determination to fight for their basic rights.
