A woman pedestrian lost her life in a road accident at Mangor-Hill in Vasco on Saturday, marking the second fatality involving a Mahindra Thar within 24 hours in the region. The incident occurred a day after a drunk Thar driver was fatally struck by a scooterist, who later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The scooterist's nephew, who was riding pillion, also sustained injuries.
Details of the Accident
The fatal accident took place near La-Rose building on Mangor-Hill at approximately 12:15 PM. According to police reports, a speeding Thar driven by Abhijit Rane, a resident of Orulem, Vasco, allegedly in a rash and negligent manner, struck Genadevi Jaiswar, a pedestrian from Baina, as she was walking along the side of the road.
Jaiswar sustained severe injuries to the back of her head due to the impact and fall. She was immediately rushed to Chicalim Sub District Hospital but was later transferred to Goa Medical College (GMC) due to the severity of her condition, where she was declared dead.
Police Investigation
The Vasco police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident. The driver, Abhijit Rane, is being questioned, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
Previous Incidents Involving Thar Vehicles
This accident comes just a day after another Thar-related fatality. On Friday, a drunk man driving a Thar was hit by a scooterist, and the scooterist later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The rider's nephew, who was a pillion passenger, was also injured in that incident.
In a separate incident last week, a hit-and-run case in Sirlim, Margao, involved a speeding Thar from Maharashtra that critically injured a local woman rider. The police slapped an attempt to murder charge on the driver, who fled the scene but was later traced to Calangute with the help of CCTV footage. The Thar used in that accident was also seized.
