Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has stirred a fresh controversy with his remarks on cow worship and beef consumption. Speaking at an event in Gorakhpur, he questioned, "Do those who consume beef also drink pig's milk?" The comment came as he defended the sanctity of cows in Hindu culture.
Divine Status of Cows
Adityanath emphasized that the cow, though an animal, holds a revered place akin to a deity. "The cow may belong to the animal realm, it is akin to a deity…there exists a divine essence within it," he said. He argued that those who oppose cow slaughter or beef consumption do so out of religious devotion, not hatred for other communities.
Political Reactions
The statement has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties, who accused the Chief Minister of making insensitive remarks. Critics say such comments further polarize society and divert attention from pressing governance issues. Supporters, however, defended his right to express religious sentiments.
This is not the first time Adityanath has made headlines for his cow-related statements. He has previously advocated for a nationwide ban on cow slaughter and promoted the economic and spiritual benefits of cow protection. The cow is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, and its protection is a key political issue in many Indian states, particularly Uttar Pradesh.
Context and Controversy
The remarks were made during a speech addressing a gathering of cow protectors. Adityanath linked cow reverence to Indian culture and questioned the logic of selectively opposing certain animal products. His analogy comparing beef eating to consuming pig milk was intended to highlight what he sees as inconsistency in dietary choices.
The Chief Minister's office later clarified that his comments were not meant to offend any community but to underscore the cultural importance of cows. Nevertheless, the controversy underscores the deep divisions over cow-related issues in India, where religious sentiments often clash with dietary practices and individual freedoms.
