YSRCP Protests Disrupt Andhra Legislative Council, Demand Dairy Scandal Debate
High drama unfolded in the legislative council of Andhra Pradesh on Monday as proceedings were severely disrupted following intense protests by members of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) during the crucial Question Hour. The YSRCP legislators rushed aggressively to the chairman's podium, raising loud slogans and demanding an immediate and thorough discussion on the alleged controversial links between Heritage Foods and Indapur Dairy.
Chairman's Appeals Ignored as Order Breaks Down
Despite repeated and earnest appeals from Chairman Koyye Moshenu Raju to maintain decorum and allow the House to continue with its scheduled legislative agenda, the protesting YSRCP members refused to relent. Their persistent and vociferous sloganeering forced the Question Hour to be stalled midway, bringing all essential legislative business to a complete and abrupt halt. This disruption deprived other legislators of a vital opportunity to raise pressing public issues, undermining the democratic functioning of the assembly.
Ministers Condemn Protest as Irresponsible and Undemocratic
Several ministers in the council strongly condemned the conduct of the YSRCP members, terming their behavior "irresponsible" and "an insult to democratic traditions." They emphasized that such actions not only disrespect the sanctity of the House but also hinder governance by preventing meaningful discussions on public welfare matters.
Minister Manohar Calls for Respectful and Productive Debates
Later in the day, State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar addressed the issue, stating, "We should make full use of the time of the legislative assemblies. Our responsibility is to bring grassroots issues to the attention of the government in a strong and effective manner. YSRCP members should respect the House and make use of valuable time." He further urged all representatives, including those from Jana Sena, to focus on meaningful debates and strategic interventions in both the Assembly and the Council to ensure productive legislative sessions.
The incident highlights ongoing political tensions in Andhra Pradesh, with opposition parties leveraging parliamentary forums to press for accountability on alleged scandals, even at the cost of disrupting normal proceedings. The demand for a debate on the Heritage-Indapur Dairy links reflects broader concerns over transparency and governance in the state's dairy sector.
