Aizawl: The ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) achieved a landslide victory in the elections to the 19-ward Aizawl Municipal Council (AMC), winning 17 wards. The counting of votes was completed and results were declared on Monday.
The vote share of ZPM was 71,470 (47.44%) out of the total 1,50,640 votes polled in the civic polls on April 21.
Mizo National Front (MNF) secured only one ward with 46,131 votes (30.62%), while Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) won one ward with the vote share of 31,097 (20.05%).
ZPM, MNF and MPCC contested all the 19 seats, while BJP contested only 11 seats. There were no Independent candidates. BJP's vote share was barely 880 (0.58%). It failed to open its account.
Though six seats were reserved for women, the municipal polls witnessed nine women candidates winning the election as three women candidates (two ZPM nominees and one MNF candidate) became victorious in general seats. The 5th AMC witnessed the largest representation of women in the history of the municipal body.
Sources within the ruling ZPM said R Lalawmpuii, who was elected to the AMC for the second term, is the most likely candidate for Aizawl mayor. If elected, she will be the first woman mayor of Aizawl. Lalawmpuii is also the president of 'Zonu', the women wing of ZPM.
