Ahmedabad's Ambitious Sports and Infrastructure Overhaul for Global Events

Ahmedabad is embarking on a transformative journey to become a premier host for international sporting events, with the state budget committing a substantial Rs 1,278 crore to develop world-class sports facilities and enhance core urban infrastructure. This strategic investment is driven by the city's selection as the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and its aspiration to secure the 2036 Olympics, positioning Ahmedabad for a defining decade of growth and global recognition.

Budget Highlights and Key Allocations

Presented by Finance Minister Kanu Desai, the 2026-27 budget outlines a comprehensive plan to prepare Gujarat's commercial capital for these prestigious events. A standout feature is the Rs 500 crore allocation for the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will serve as a central hub for the upgrade. Additionally, Rs 101 crore has been earmarked for sports infrastructure connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, fostering regional synergy.

Transport and Mobility Enhancements

Transportation forms the backbone of Ahmedabad's upgrade strategy. The budget includes:

  • Rs 177 crore for expanding the ring road to ease traffic congestion.
  • Rs 100 crore to transform SG Highway into a 'green urban highway', promoting sustainable travel.
  • Significant metro rail funding: Rs 676.40 crore for Phase I operations and Rs 21.12 crore for Phase II.
  • Initial provisions of Rs 40 crore for a metro link from Koteshwar Road to Sardar Patel Airport and Rs 42.90 crore for Thaltej to Godhavi, improving airport and fringe area connectivity.

Overall, Rs 2,217 crore has been allocated for Gujarat Metro Rail projects in 2026-27, focusing on expanding the Ahmedabad and Surat systems.

Urban Resilience and Water Infrastructure

To ensure civic strength supports sporting prestige, the budget prioritizes urban resilience and basic services:

  • Rs 800 crore as external funding support for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation under the Gujarat Resilient Cities Partnership Programme and for Auda areas.
  • Rs 1,044 crore for a bulk pipeline from Dhanki to Navda to meet long-term drinking water needs in Ahmedabad and nearby districts.
  • The Peri-Urban Livability Improvement Project, backed by a Rs 400 crore international loan, will provide drinking water infrastructure to Bopal, Sanand, Godhavi, and Shela.
  • Rs 624 crore to complete weirs and barrages on the Sabarmati River, enhancing water resource management.

Public Safety and Governance Upgrades

Public safety and efficient governance are integral to the plan:

  • Rs 100 crore for an integrated control and command centre to improve city management.
  • Another Rs 100 crore for an adaptive traffic control system, boosting mobility and security.
  • Support from the Sugam project, which includes specialized police posts and vehicle tracking systems.
  • New police stations in Vastral, Hanspura, and Motera, along with new 'P', 'R', and 'S' police divisions to decentralize policing.
  • Ahmedabad has been selected as a pilot city for premium and express services for vehicle registrations and licenses, streamlining administrative processes.

Additional Initiatives and Greening Efforts

The budget also includes Rs 25 crore under the Van Kavach initiative for greening efforts, complementing the urban upgrades. An expansion of the revenue building at Daskroi is planned to support growing administrative needs.

This holistic approach underscores Ahmedabad's commitment to leveraging sports as a catalyst for comprehensive urban development, setting a benchmark for future host cities.
