Indian-Australian Athlete Embarks on 5,000 km Run for Social Change
In an extraordinary display of endurance and compassion, Indian-Australian athlete Om Satija is currently undertaking a monumental 5,000-kilometer run from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. This ambitious journey, part of the 'One India Run' initiative, seamlessly blends athletic prowess with a profound social mission aimed at transforming lives across the nation.
Remarkable Progress and Daily Routine
The 23-year-old physiotherapist from Melbourne has already completed an impressive 3,500 kilometers in just 75 days, maintaining a rigorous daily average of nearly 50 kilometers. His recent arrival in Lucknow marks a significant milestone in this cross-country odyssey, which is scheduled to conclude in Srinagar by mid-May.
Every morning at 4:30 AM, Satija laces up his running shoes to begin another day of relentless progress. His disciplined routine and unwavering commitment have become a source of inspiration for communities along his route, demonstrating what human determination can achieve when coupled with a noble purpose.
Dual Mission: Fitness Inspiration and Fundraising
Satija's run serves a dual purpose that extends far beyond personal achievement. "The run is aimed to inspire young Indians to pursue fitness, resilience and ambition, while raising funds for children from marginalized and leprosy-affected communities," explained the dedicated athlete.
His fundraising target is set at Rs 60 lakh, with all proceeds directed to the Udayan Foundation in Kolkata. This organization works tirelessly to improve the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those affected by leprosy, providing them with education, healthcare, and opportunities for a better future.
Childhood Experience Sparks Lifelong Mission
The motivation behind this incredible undertaking traces back to a formative childhood experience. During a school visit to India, Satija accompanied his father to Ram Jhula in Rishikesh, where they distributed blankets to those in need.
"I saw a person afflicted by leprosy for the first time, an incident that left a deep impact on me," Satija recalled. This poignant encounter planted the seeds of social responsibility that have now blossomed into his current nationwide campaign for change.
National and Global Recognition
Beyond his current mission, Satija is also attempting to become the first person to run the entire length of India's east coast, a feat that has garnered attention both nationally and internationally. His efforts represent more than just physical endurance—they symbolize the power of individual initiative to create meaningful social impact.
According to Abhishek Malik from 'One India Run', the program is specifically designed to inspire Indians to recognize that fitness, dreaming big, and taking initiative can be powerful tools for change.
"By running the length of the country, the project aims to spark conversations around resilience, health, and social responsibility—all while mobilizing tangible support for vulnerable communities," Malik emphasized.
Growing Support and Community Engagement
The project has already generated substantial momentum, raising close to Rs 20 lakh through a combination of individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and grassroots community support. Local events along Satija's route have helped amplify the message and engage citizens in the cause.
As he continues his journey northward, each kilometer covered represents not just physical distance but also growing awareness about the importance of fitness, social responsibility, and supporting those in need. Satija's run serves as a moving testament to how one person's determination can inspire an entire nation and make a tangible difference in countless lives.
