Australia Aims to Deepen Sports Ties with India Beyond Cricket, Eyes Major Events
Australia Seeks Broader Sports Engagement with India Beyond Cricket

Australia Pushes for Expanded Sports Partnership with India, Targeting Major Global Events

In an exclusive interview, Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, has outlined a strategic push to deepen bilateral sports engagement beyond the traditional stronghold of cricket. Speaking from Gandhinagar, Green emphasized that while cricket ties are robust and growing across various formats and demographics, Australia is now focusing efforts on collaborating in other sports and supporting India in hosting major international sporting events.

Moving Beyond Cricket: A New Frontier in Indo-Australian Relations

Green acknowledged the maturity of cricket engagements between the two nations, which span men's, women's, differently-abled competitions, Tests, IPL, and T20 matches. However, he stated, "where I am throwing my effort is behind the engagement in other sports and particular major sporting events, because this is where India is seeking to make a new and higher mark. This is where Australia already has quite some skills and capabilities." This shift aims to leverage Australia's expertise in organizing large-scale events to bolster India's aspirations on the global sports stage.

Supporting India's Ambitions: Commonwealth Games 2030 and Olympics 2036

The High Commissioner highlighted India's plans to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and its ambition to secure the 2036 Olympics as pivotal moments. He described these endeavors as "an important step in India's national journey," noting that hosting such events aligns with India's emergence as a key player in global affairs. Green pointed out a synergistic pathway: "Australia is hosting the Olympics in 2032. India is hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030, and has the ambition to host the 2036 Olympics. So, if I read the Indian and Gujarati ambitions right, this is an important step."

Australia's Role in Enhancing India's Sporting Infrastructure

Green detailed that Australia has already initiated support for India's sporting ambitions. During a visit by Australia's foreign minister to Delhi in November, three announcements were made regarding assistance in this field. He explained, "We are already on this pathway, but I can see that there could be more ways in which Australia and India can benefit. That India may be able to benefit from our elite sporting expertise, and Australia can certainly play a part in making sure that India hosts really high class major sporting events." This collaboration aims to help India fulfill its potential as a sporting nation through shared knowledge and resources.

The High Commissioner, who also serves as Australia's ambassador to Bhutan, underscored the mutual benefits of this expanded partnership. By focusing on major events and diverse sports, both countries stand to gain from enhanced diplomatic ties and economic opportunities, reinforcing their positions in the international sports community.
