Columbus Blue Jackets Secure Rick Bowness as Head Coach for Next Season
The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a decisive move to strengthen their team by signing Rick Bowness to return as head coach for the upcoming season. This announcement came on Thursday, with Bowness replacing Dean Evason after agreeing to a new contract extension. The decision follows a season marked by challenges, including a turbulent finish and public controversy.
Player Backing and Turbulent Season End
Reports indicate that Rick Bowness has received full support from his players despite a rocky conclusion to the season. This backing comes in the wake of a controversial public rant he made after a 2-1 season-ending loss to the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. The Blue Jackets, with a record of 40-30-12, finished the season on a six-game home losing streak (0-5-1) at Nationwide Arena, marking the sixth consecutive year the team failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Following the announcement, Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell expressed strong conviction that Bowness should remain behind the bench in Columbus. Waddell highlighted Bowness's extensive experience, noting that his 2,763 games as a coach are the most in the NHL, underscoring his veteran status and deep knowledge of the league.
Bowness's Passion and Player Reactions
In a statement regarding his return to the NHL, Rick Bowness acknowledged his passionate nature, which sometimes leads to emotional outbursts. He said, "Sometimes my passion gets in my way, and it does, and that's happened before. I'm hoping it won't happen, but it's why I'm sitting here. It’s the passion and the love of the game, so that's who I am." He further admitted, "And you know, there are times it goes overboard. I know that I probably pushed it a little bit far, and I get that, but that's who I am. And the players know that I'm a talker, I'm a yeller, and I love the game, and I'm passionate about the game. I love the players, and they know that."
Veteran defenseman Damon Severson voiced his approval of Bowness's return, stating, "He's the best coach I've personally ever had. I've had a couple of really good coaches. I've had some really not good coaches, but 'Bones' has been the best one so far." This endorsement from a key player highlights the positive rapport Bowness has built within the team, despite recent setbacks.
Coaching Career and Organizational Faith
According to NHL statistics, Rick Bowness compiled a record of 21-11-5 with the Blue Jackets this season. Over his extensive NHL coaching career, he has amassed totals of 331-419-42 with 48 ties in 840 games, having coached for teams such as the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, and the Blue Jackets. Notably, Bowness retired for personal reasons as the Winnipeg Jets coach following the 2023-24 season, making his return to Columbus a significant comeback.
The Columbus Blue Jackets organization has further demonstrated its faith in the veteran coach by confirming that Bowness will remain in charge after agreeing to a contract extension. This move signals a commitment to stability and experience as the team aims to overcome recent playoff droughts and improve performance in the upcoming season.
