British boxer Colin Cairney has tragically died in Thailand after sustaining a serious head injury in an incident involving a tuk-tuk on the island of Phuket. The 22-year-old professional boxer, who had an undefeated record of 10 wins, was discovered unconscious and bleeding on a road in the early hours of the morning. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, which reportedly occurred following a disagreement over a taxi fare.
Colin Cairney Reportedly Fell from Vehicle After Fare Dispute in Phuket
According to reports from the Mirror, investigators believe Cairney was returning to The Nature Hotel, where he was staying, after a night out in Phuket. Police suspect there was a discussion between Cairney and the tuk-tuk driver regarding payment for the journey. Reports indicate that Cairney did not have cash with him at the time, and investigators believe an arrangement had been made for him to withdraw money from a cash machine to pay the fare. During the journey, the boxer is believed to have fallen head-first from the moving vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 4:10 am and found him unconscious on the road with severe injuries. He was initially taken to Patong Hospital before being transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for specialist treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the area. According to reports, the footage showed no signs that Cairney had been assaulted or pushed from the vehicle. Authorities currently believe he fell out of the tuk-tuk and suffered a catastrophic head injury.
Boxing Scotland and 1314 Boxing Club Pay Tribute to Colin Cairney
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is supporting Cairney's family following his death. A spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand.” Tributes have also poured in from the boxing community.
A spokesperson for Boxing Scotland said: “Boxing Scotland are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former international boxer Colin Cairney. The 22-year-old represented Scotland many times at prestigious competitions such as the European Junior Championships and the World Youth Championships.”
Meanwhile, his boxing club, 1314, described the young fighter as much more than a teammate. “He is a huge part of Team 1314 and someone who means so much to so many people,” the club said. “His presence, his character, and the memories we shared with him will stay with us forever. There are no words for a loss like this. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Colin’s family, friends, and everyone who loved him at this incredibly difficult time. Colin, you will be remembered forever and will always be in our hearts. Rest easy, Champ.”
