Commonwealth Sport Delegation Begins Four-Day Gujarat Visit for 2030 Games Review
A high-level delegation from Commonwealth Sport, led by President Donald Rukare, commenced a four-day visit to Gujarat on Wednesday to evaluate preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be hosted in Ahmedabad. The delegation, which includes officials from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), arrived with the primary objective of reviewing ongoing and completed projects related to the multisport event.
Meeting with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel
The delegation's first engagement was a meeting with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar. In an official statement, Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare and CEO Katie Sadleir expressed their appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality extended by the state government. Chief Minister Patel shared on his X handle that it was a pleasure to host the delegation during their inaugural official visit to Gujarat for the Games review.
During the discussions, the focus was on time-bound, qualitative, and effective project planning. Patel assured the delegation and the IOA that the state government is committed to providing all necessary facilities and infrastructure to ensure the successful conduct of the Commonwealth Games. He emphasized Gujarat's readiness by showcasing world-class infrastructure, reaffirming the state's dedication to hosting a memorable event.
Invitation to Study Glasgow Games Arrangements
As part of the visit, President Rukare and CEO Sadleir extended an invitation to Chief Minister Patel to attend and study the arrangements for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, scheduled from July 23 to August 2. Patel accepted the invitation, highlighting the opportunity to gain insights and best practices for the 2030 event.
Inspection of Key Venues and Projects
The delegation, which will remain in Gujarat until April 11, plans to conduct a thorough inspection of various venues proposed for the Games. Key sites on the itinerary include:
- Veer Savarkar Sports Complex
- Narendra Modi Stadium
- EKA Arena in Ahmedabad
- Vadodara Cricket Stadium
- The Statue of Unity at Ekta Nagar
These visits aim to assess the readiness and suitability of the infrastructure for hosting international sporting events. Additionally, the delegation will hold a series of meetings with officials involved in organizing the Games to discuss logistical and operational aspects.
Background on Ahmedabad's Hosting Rights
Ahmedabad was formally awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games during the Commonwealth Sport's general assembly in November last year. This decision marks the return of the multisport event to India after a gap of two decades, following the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi. The delegation's visit underscores the importance of meticulous planning and collaboration between international and local stakeholders to ensure a successful event.
The review process is critical for aligning Gujarat's preparations with global standards, setting the stage for a world-class celebration of sports in 2030.
